Akhilesh Yadav is an Indian politician and president of the Samajwadi Party who served as the 20th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017. Having assumed office on 15 March 2012 at the age of 38, he is the youngest person to have held the office.
In the 2017 Assembly elections, the SP-Congress Alliance headed by Akhilesh Yadav was defeated by BJP. The alliance could only manage 55 seats. He submited his resignation to Governor Ram Naik on March 11, 2017.
In March, 2012, he was appointed as leader of the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. At the age of 38 years, he became the youngest Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Yadav married Dimple Yadav on 24 November 1999 and has two daughters and a son. Dimple is also a politician.
Since Yadav became chief minister, the family has been divided into two feuding groups with him against his father. Akhilesh Yadav has the support of his father’s cousin, Ram Gopal. The fight between Mulayam Singh Yadav‘s brother Shivpal Singh Yadav and Akhilesh came to light when Shivpal replaced Akhilesh as the party’s UP state unit president. In supposed retaliation, Akhilesh stripped him of key ministerial portfolios, most of which were later restored. Shivpal Yadav also expelled some youth leaders seen to be Akhilesh loyalists.
On 30 December 2016, Akhilesh was fired from the party by his father one day after he released a separate list of candidates for the upcoming UP assembly elections, only to be readmitted within a day. The following day he was elected as the national head of Samajwadi Party by his party’s national convention in Lucknow, replacing his father.
